Fallout 3 is far superior to any of the games you listed. Plus, once the G.E.C.K. content creation tools and expansions are released, it will be an even better game!

I won't disagree that Fallout 3 was a good game, but Left 4 Dead is what I prefer.  Four player coop or eight player versus combined with the Director's unpredictable (and somewhat sadistic) ability to make every game you play different from the last has a lot more replayability than what I got out of Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 didn't make the list? Shame. Was probably my Game of the Year. As far as Left 4 Dead, it was fun and good, but didn't last long due to having such few levels to play, only 1 of which is actually fun. You can easily put 50+ hours into Fallout 3 before it loses it's fun factor. Left 4 Dead will maybe last you 10 hours, if that.

I put in about 30 hours into Fallout 3.  The ending really put a chill on my will to try and replay it, though.

I invested 10+ hours in the L4D -demo-.  I've probably put about 20+ into the full version since.  I've been able to scrounge up a really good group of friends to play with, loads of fun.

Hey Arad, I put over 100 hours into Left4Dead, why? Because I have friends, and even IRL friends, we throw LAN parties. Friends are awesome, you should get some.

They left out Bio Shock last year and this year they forget Fallout 3. Once agin it begs the question: Do these guys even play games? Or are they shilling for certain companies?

I dare say they're simply trying to keep the list mostly limited to games that can be played on mainstream PC's.  Call of Duty was the only game in the list that would likely take more than a cheap Wal-Mart computer to work, but it could still potentially run if all the settings were dumbed down as low as they'll go.

The other big titles, such as Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Crysis Warhead and the like aren't good choices for gifts for the masses, since the masses don't tend to have the equipment to run them no matter their settings.

And, let's face it.  This list is geared more toward parents who might not know what kinds of games their kids will like.  Given that, the other games we didn't see on the list aren't exactly what a lot of parents would deem appropriate for their young'ns.  Those titles are more for older players, and those older players tend to follow game releases themselves, so they don't need lists like this in the first place. ;-)

it that doesn't, I'm sure the claim that he can magically make 2-3 year old hardware run a 2008 source engine game run like "butta" will give it away. Of course if he's using that old of a machine, perhaps he's ignorant to what today's "butta" runs like.

I liked the list but I have a suggestion.  Many computers these days will run all of the games out there but some will not.  My computer is two years old and has integrated graphics so I can't run Far Cry 2 or Call of Duty.  In a review that seems aimed at non-hardcore gamers it might be a good idea to mention that some games were not meant to be played on a cheap or old computer.  You might consider directing people to systemrequirementslab dot com to verify that they can run the more demanding games.

Fallout 3 is cited by all of my gaming magazines as a sure Game of the Year, and you don't have it in your top ten? How can you have an oversight like that? And is it true that you didn't list Bioshock last year, again a Game of the Year from everybody? That is incredibly lacking.

Fallout 3 is simply amazing and one of the best games I have played of all time (as well as Bioshock). But if you think Spores is better, then we're just in very different gaming universes.

Bioshock was terrible, the atmosphere and story were amazing, but the game was severely lacking in anything to keep me playing. It was just a bastard child of System Shock 2 that came from a relationship with console tards. Fallout 3 was good, but the dialouge is so stupid and bland along with the forced cursing and the fact people are always worrying about you pick pocketing them even if they're your best friends made it feel terrible.

Having not yet played Left 4 Dead, my vote goes to Fallout 3 as the most enjoyable, intriguing, hard-to-stop-playing game this year. I'm suprised it's not on this list.

I also have to vote for Fallout 3...Great game...as was BioShock last year...

As for Left 4 Dead...I mean, it's just constantly respawning zombies, over and over...I'm a pretty harcore shooter fan, but I really insist on some kind of basis or background, a "story" if you will...and, at least for me, L4D consisted entirely of moving 50 feet and being swarned by zombies...Rinse and repeat...Not a lot of game there...

But Fallout 3.....THAT is what gaming is all about...

I haven't played L4D online...I'm not really big on 4 or 8 or 16 player games...I far prefer HUGE games like PlanetSide...Playing with literally hundreds on-screen and battling is a totally different experience.....

Lord of the Rings Online is the only online game I will currently play.  There is enough backstory to satisfy anyone who enjoyed Tolkein, and it is fun to see familiar characters such as Strider and actually interact with them.  The game engine is stable, and there was even a recent expansion that allows those who have maxed out their levels to go even further.  I enjoy it immensely.

Once again, MSNBC copy-pastes the most popular games on some website like Gamespot or IGN and calls it an article.

Glad World of Goo got on there, but it's really only because it got a lot of (rightful) attention. Not because MSNBC has suddenly gained knowledge of video gaming,

For me, FATE: Undiscovered Realms is easily GotY. I played a demo and was hooked, so I got the full version. A great sequel to an already great game. :)

I've been playing LotRO since closed beta and agree it's the best MMO EVER, but a lot of gaming sites tend to overlook LotRO in favor of MMO for Dummies,  WoW.    That's why I'm not ragging on MSN for not mentioning LotRO.

But ignoring Fallout 3 is completely inexcusable.  It's #1 on every other list as it should be.  It's the most amazing and immersive single-player RPG I've ever played... and it's been keeping me out of LotRO these days ;-)

I am a huge video game enthusiast, and I do like the top game lists MSNBC make a part of their game coverage, but I have to take exception with this list.   How is it possible that Lego Batman, (a console port), and Red Alert 3, (a great game but been there done that), can be listed and NEITHER Witcher or Fallout 3 is even mentioned. Okay, I will give you Witcher (it started as a sleeper, and it may not be for everyone due to content), but Fallout 3?  Has no one on your staff played Fallout 3?  The innovation, the graphics, the story line, the open world, the almost 100 hours of game play, the satirical humor.......was there something about Lego Batman or for that matter 2 other games you mentioned I missed?

Who decides these? I mean really it seems second rate that Bioshock (2007) followed by Fallout 3 left off list. If they are considering calling this mainstream gaming information, then to overlook Fallout 3 is irreprehensible and now deserves the cold shoulder from the gaming community.

It is not even my favorite game, but there are so many tasks to do and explorer it is insurmountable in 1 play through. If MSNBC is talking straight replayability (wow, warhoomaer,cod5,etc) then the title is wrong for Best 2008 Games.

I will no longer even bother with MSNBC, I hope that have good time getting ads to pay the person who worte this list, if they don't know to even rank the best games. BTW your target audience for the gaming section is probably early/mid 30s and we all played the first Fallouts, good job!
