Call of Duty: World at War!
You're kidding, right?! CoD:WaW/CoD5 was the biggest let down of the year. It had a very short single-player game and, multiplayer game is just rehashed CoD4 with crappier weapon choices.
All of the 2008 game releases were major dissapointments, I have yet to play any "Great Games" this year. Call of duty world at war is still beating the dead horse that is world war 2, Gears of war 2 has the most broken multiplayer of all time. Im hoping left for dead will not leave me as dissapointed as the others.
TE, I only have one thing to say to you:
Woot.
yeah you are right the multiplayer is like CoD 4 with crappier weapons...the fact that they added more challenges is a plus, but the thing that does it for me with World at War is the co-op campaign. The challenges in the co-op mode that go towards your multiplayer rank adds another level to the game. I was also amazed at the replayability of the campaign mode. Not to mention Nazi Zombies. I was very surprised this game wasn't in there.
For all the great games on the list, I'm quite surprised that Saints Row 2 wasn't listed here. While a bit rough around the edges it infinitely more fun to play than the all-mighty GTA IV. Don't get me wrong; GTA IV was a great game, but it was a disappointment as a follow-up to what is currently the apex of the series: GTA: San Andreas. GTA IV, while taking monumental leaps forward in the realism department, also took several steps back where it counted most: Ye olde department of FUN. This, in my humblest of opinions, is not only where Saints Row 2 excelled, but also where the Saints Row 2 series has surpassed Rockstar's juggernaut series. My hat's off to Volition!
You have to be kidding me. Saint's Row 2? I don't know what I am missing. I have played every GTA game since 2.0. I bought saints row 2 and took it to gamestop after a frustrating and dissapointing week. The graphics are ridiculous. The handling of the cars are worse. I thought they wouldn't get any worse than GTA. I couldn't stand SR2. If there was ever a game that was a cheap attempt at capitalizing on the success of another game. SR2 is it.
yea ur way wrong gta4 and sr2 just went diffrent ways gta in the boring but graphical way and sr2 with the cartoony and fun way the driveing is fine maby u just suck at video games
Call of Duty: World at War!
I cannot believe you mention so much of the same, tired stuff, but did not even bring up Banjoo Kazooie. Yes, it's the same title as games of yore. But, the similarity to the past ends there. Obviously, the author has never seen it--go out and get a copy so that next time you'll know better. --mark d.
I had 2 xbox360s blow up. I got disgusted and threw them away and bought a PS3. PS3 rocks!!! I will never buy another xbox. Anyone want a dozen xbox360 games? I have been using them as coasters...
I do!!!
What games do you have for the 360, and how much do you want for them?
Jim
Yeah I'll take them.
What games do you have and how much are you selling them for?
Call of Duty World at War, awesome graphics, top shooter game*****
are u serious? the lighting in some levels sucks, the guns sights are awful they are also so similar to every COD game ever created. just cause they add fire doesnt mean that its awesome. and GOW2 had too many cinematic elements, just let me play and cut the stupid cut scenes. Fifa 09 best game of the year
Dead SPace is by far the game of the year. This list was obviously not made by a true gamer... Trust me DeadSpace (I only play games on level hard so go with that) is a true game with enough shocks and twist to have you playing for days.... Gears of War 2 was such a let down all you have to do is last three rounds and the enemies kill themselves. The rest of the list same old same old... Gran theft, Madden, and SK9 are the same games every year just with a slight upgrade... they shouldn't even be allowed because there automatic (true gamer would know that)... Rock on and pick up DeadSpace-The King's pick of the year...
I have to agree, and I'm also disappointed that few "hitlists" have even noticed that DeadSpace exists. The game is downright filled with anxiety and terror; I jumped and screamed like a little girl on Halloween! I've played it through multiple times on Impossible mode, and I keep coming back for more...it's original, with a great storyline, superb graphics, and definitely qualifies for game of the year IMHO. Check it out!
True, all the "Top Games" were more like top bribes for high reviews. Theyre garbage.
I tried deadspace though, While the upgrade system was interesting I couldnt take the monsters seriously and fell asleep. Try fatal frame (the first one) The only scary game ive ever played.
Dead Space was an awesome game that alot of people overlooked. I don't know if I'd put it that high on the list though. It wasn't very innovative although the zero g was a nice touch. I thought it was depressingly easy to kill the monsters. Otherwise it was a whole lot of fun. The first Fatal Frame was probably the scariest game ever made.

So far, I like The Last Remnant.
1. Call of Duty World at War
2. Gears of War 2
3. Dead Space
Far Cry 2 isn't a masterpiece, but it deserves some love for sheer scale and fun.
CoD:WaW is also a huge leap for Treyarch; a grittier game than most, and they didn't botch the story a la CoD 3
Braid. Sure it's XLA, but it's spectacular.
Dead Space should be here too...I haven't played it, but having seen and read as much as a I have about it, it deserves a single digit ranking.
Madden, NBA2K8 and Burnout really don't belong here, we've been playing the same monotonous carbon copies of sports games over and over again for a decade.
Burnout was incredible this year...and they are still releasing new content! They were able to completely change the game with downloads, I have never seen that on any other game before. (weather, day/night, bikes, new challenges, new cars, new island coming soon...)
Call of Duty: World at War!!!
Grand Theft Auto IV!!
I have had the ring of death 3 times. Once more and I am ditching it for a PS3, which would really, really suck because I love my games!
If you buy a 360, get the warranty. 11 months...ring o death showed up. Took back to BB and gave me a new one. A friend sent his back to MS three times before he got one that worked. COD World at War!
the new jasper model is working it's way onto the store shelves as we speak. Wait unitl January and by then this new model should be pretty easy to get.
It has the new smaller chip they have been talking about forever. It does not get anywhere as hot as the old chips, so it should finally, once and for all get rid of the 3 red rings of death.
From what i've read, make sure the manufacture date is November 2008 and later.
i hadda send mine to texas to get fixed. they sent me a new one, but, once in a while that ring shows up, but never when the game is being played. if its turned on, but not connected to the t.v., it will show red. my warranty is up, and iam praying this lasts. PS2 does not have all the good game makers that Microsoft does. i saw it on here that a new 360 is down to $200, i have not seen it that low. it's still $300 here in the N.E
Call of Duty - World at War is by far the best game for XBOX 360. The graphics and maps are just outstanding. The guns are better and with the added cooperative missions it makes the game at the top of my list.
yea...If you suck at Halo
Whomever wrote this piece needs to be shown a few more games. How could Dead Space be overlooked? Did the writer even play the game? Madden 09? Please...
It's "whoever" not "whomever".
Thank you grammar police. You are a fine individual. Next time try contribtuting to the topic. People understood the point of my posting whether I said "whomever" or "whoever". Get real.
1. Halo 3 (it is a classic that truly seperates the gamers from the players)
2. Gears of War 2 (Okay Gears 1 was the reason i bought the xbox, this has been long awaited)
3. Guitar Hero: World Tour (Guitar Hero rocks. hands down. I still play all of them.)
Dead Space anyone?? The game was freakin' awesome, even if it did suffer from a bit of "Take Object A to Point B" monotony...
Who made this list? Madden '09 was a massive dissapointment! Put NCAA '09 up here instead, at least that game got the online dynasty right!
Here's how I would rank the top 10 games of the year:
1. Fallout 3
2. Grand Theft Auto IV
3. Dead Space
4. Left 4 Dead
5. Fable 2
6. Gears of War 2
7. Call of Duty: World at War
8. Rock Band 2
9. Burnout: Paradise
10. NHL 2K9
that's a pretty good list.
NHL 2K9!!! Are you kidding me>? Man up and try NHL 2009, now that's a game !
Right one there. 2K9 totally blows, but NHL 2009 is awesome. The graphics are better, the play is smoother and more realistic, and the online league is cool too.
1. Game of this year, last year, and all following years is Halo 3, all the bums that suck at it go to games where any 2 year old could kill a pro(call of duty).
2. Guitar Hero: world tour ( all of the guitar hero games are freaking amazing. They take you away from the traditional controller and allows you to interact more with the game)
3. Gears of War 2 ( Gears 1 is the reason me and all of my friends even bought our 360's) if it wasn't for gears i would have just stuck with my original xbox and halo 2. well ofcourse until 3 came out.
gaylo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Halo has been an amazing future-weapons game since the first one. Since then, they've just got better and better. Gaylo? If that's all you can come up with to argue your case, I suggest you do some research. If you think about it, games pretty much die out after a year or so. Halo 3 still has an incredibley large amount of online players considering how long it has been out. After playing new games, I always end up coming back and playing Halo again. It is, in my opinion, just so much better than all the other games out there. Bungie puts so much work into everything, as well. For example, say you get a headshot on some-one (with the Sniper Rifle). The body of that unlucky guy isn't going to fly 20 miles offf into the distance. No, his knees will buckle, then land on his face. It's just amazing to me all the details that they put into the game. The little things like that make all the difference to me. And the whole "faceless hero" thiong the Chief has going on, that's just too cool. -A Gamer Chick
I'll agree that Madden 'doesn't belong on this list but for a different reason... it's not only the best game of the year, it's the best game in the history of video games. For those of you that think it's "monotonous," it's clear that you've never played it because Madden '09 and Madden '07 are entirely different. The same can be said for Madden '07 and Madden '05. It's really just not fair to compare other games to it because it is on it's own level. Fallout 3 and CoD:WaW were my favorite games in the next tier, though.
Mirror's Edge
As a gamer on a budget I usually judge my game quality on not only play experience, but what the company chooses to do with add on content afterward. I have found Burnout Paradise to take top honors this year for the absolutely free add on content they gave out. It's nice to see a company that continues to gives to us after spending $59.99 (or$29.99 now) instead of a company who tries to see how much more $ they can sqeeze out of us after we spend our $59.99.
As for Dead Space, it was a good game but I also am a player who likes to tackle the hardest setting the first time and as KingShariff stated "days of play" are all you will get out of this game. I beat this game on hard in less than a week and after that the insane difficulty seemed even easier than the hard as I knew what to do to zip through the game. A game with this short of a replay time makes it hard to want spend money on the add on content.
While I love Fallout 3 and am still playing it after beating the main quest, the way it's ended makes the hope of major expansion low. I can't see more than the addition of items, quests, perks, and possibly the hope of a higher level cap. I certainly hope Bethesda proves me wrong on this. I would love to see the addition of a new area.
As for GTA IV it is great but after GTA San Andreas having mulitple cities it seemed like a step backwards to only have one in GTA IV. I read of an expantion coming in '09 that looks promising though with a different protaganist and story line.
Gamer on a budget - get Gamefly.
Fallout 3 is soooo overhyped, it's no Mass Effect which was so great I played it twice. Fallout 3 was boring, (no vehicles in the Capital wasteland so you walk everywhere).
Thank God I didn't spend 60 bucks, I sent it back to Gamefly and started another run at Halo 3 - which is even more fun the 2nd time.
lol.....I'm stunned at the Halo die-hards. They never say never, that's for sure. To me, Halo was a great series, but live never really did much for me.
As for this year.....Fallout 3, without a doubt, hands down, nothing else close, is the game of the year. This was such a good game. And without a doubt this game delivers the most bang for your buck. HUGE post-apolyptic world, that is put together wonderfully. You are always wondering what's up ahead. I played the hell out of this game. No idea how much time I spent in the Fallout 3 world, but, it was MANY hours. MANY.
The one negative, the ending was a bit of a let down. I go all that way for that?? But, still it was the thrill of the journey.
Yes, there is no multiplayer, but to me, you don't need multiplayer for a great game. You need a huge fascinating world with an excellent story line and good game play mechanics. If you can add a decent multiplayer to that, then it's just icing on the cake.
Dude - Fallout 3 was boring, I spent the hours and got sick of walking around and listening to 40's music. The story was ok with a lame ending. I sent it back to Gamefly with a 7 rating, and since I sent back Madden, and the New Years holiday left me without a new game, I started playing the Halo 3 campaign for the 2nd time- now that's a fun game. As far as RPG/FSP combo games go I give Mass Effect a 10.
Madden 09.....come on. Best game of the year? I'll give it this, it's the best NFL football game of the year.
until the overhaul the now ancient and antiquated franchise/dynasty mode, the game will just be average at best.
