'Red Ringed' Xbox 360s still dog Microsoft

Microsoft came clean over a year ago about the hardware failures plaguing its Xbox 360 consoles. But still, gamers continue to receive the "Red Ring of Death" on their replacement consoles, and their replacement's replacement. Can Microsoft win back gamers' goodwill?

They could have won me back if my second and third replacement had not failed as well.  Now, for gaming, they have lost me completely.  I switched to a PS3 and have no complaints so far.

I bought mine the week after it came out and have not had a problem with it yet. I have taken it to afghanistan where the room temp was always around 90 degrees and have played it for hours on end. I just keep it on a set of RC car wheels so its elevated and keep a small usb fan blowing on it and its good to go.

My 1st 360, bought 3 months after launch contracted the RROD after 5 months.  I then had 5 more for a total of 6 get the RROD during the next 1 1/2 years.  Currently the one I have has been stable for the longest of them all, but I no longer buy multiplatform games for the 360.  PS3 only.  I just cannot trust the 360, and was relieved to make it thru Gears of War 2 without incident.

I'm just curious, I had the Red Ring of Death appear a couple of times in one day but when I went back to the system they were gone and returned since. Should I still send it out for repair or replacement?

I just sent my 3rd box back in less than 2 years.  It just had to fail 3 days before christmas.  I got a Wii for the kids this christmas.  I wish I had bought 2 more.  I should have known better than to trust anything with a Microsoft name on it.

I have only had one failure. They were trying to tell me that I was two weeks past my warranty. Well I talked it out with them. Yhey replaced it for free. and im on my second with no issues so far, but im not holding my breath.

Debating on switching to ps3 if my second fails.

I've have 3 fail on me. All have been RRoD. One was of the Elite system that was suppose to be better made. Microsoft claimed that their failure rate was about 30% or maybe less but I found this to be far from the truth in my experience. Most of my friends have also had RRoD. Out of 18 xbox 360 owners that I know, 15 have had the RRoD. 3 of them had it more than once. One of them had it fail on him 5 times. That's about 83% failure rate for us and that's not even including the multiple failures... That number would make it well over 90%.

I had one red ring about a year ago when all these problems starting surfacing. I shipped it back to them and after many weeks they replaced it with a new one. I haven't had a problem with this one yet.

You are lucky you got it back at all. I sent back my sons' x-box 360 with the same problem and customer no-service sent the box to ship it in. We sent it off and never received it. We called and called (to India I think) and no matter who we talked to they insisted that we did not send them one because they couldn't find it. They did not speak english that well and tried over and over to sell us stupid products. Many, Many, Many weeks later they sent us a piece of crap refurbished original green X-Box. I still get torqued thinking about it! We however bought another two and one got red ring again. We got a friend to fix in a week. No problems with that one so far.

I've had red rings on both mine and my sons xbox 360. sent them back and now they work fine. but its not just microsoft. i also had to send in my ps3 because it would not play any ps3 games or blue ray disk. I think all of these system are crap. maybe the japanese are starting to become more americanized in they manufacturing processes

Most of the parts for the XBOX 360 and PS3 are made in either Malaysia or the People`s Republic of China.  Not in Japan.  Almost everything is made in China as you well know.  I think you are refering to Japanese having looser quality control standards  in their manufacturing process based in China, which has already been the hallmark of US companies based around the world.

I've had two failure thus far though they wanted to charge me the second time I got the red rings.  My console failed twice within 3 months of each other.  Apparently some people have had a large number of failures.  Why doesnt Microsoft fix each one properly the first time so that they don't come back for further repairs?  That's right because they're cheap and would rather put a band-aid on the problem and hope that each console doesn't fail again, thus saving them money.  There should be a law that protects consumers against this kind of thing.  If the Xbox 360 where a car Microsoft would have been nailed for violating the "lemon law".  Unfortunatly for consumers no such law exists to protect them from a big company who wants to nickel and dime there customers.

maybe you guys aren't keeping them cool enough? it's a known fact that heat makes the RRoD come much faster.

Simply put, Microsoft sucks. Their software sucks (IE, Vista, XP, Office), their hardware sucks and their operating systems suck.

I've switched to MAC and PS3 and have had NO RRoD and my OS never hangs up anymore. WOOOHooo,,,,I'm done with Microsoft FOREVER!!!!

enjoy your new platforms while we enjoy ours...

as for Vista...  good hardware begets good performance and rock solid uptime.  I have two workstations that have been flawless in running Vista for 2+ years...  (beta through Win7betas out now)

XP - uh... what is wrong with it?  musta been a user error there...

Office - again, what is wrong with it?  works fine for a couple hundred million people... you must be the odd data point...  or maybe just odd

MAC... hmmm. they control the hardware numbnuts...  that is the one variable in the equation that MSFT cannot control with their OS AND applications...  people purchase cheap motherboards in cheap pcs and when they blue screen they blame the OS...  would like like blaming the engine for a tire blowing out...  uh... yeah.. that is it...

go hug a tree and kiss your MAC...

Suprisingly enough, myself and a half dozen of my friends who own a 360 have had 0 issues with these. We got them all at different times and at different development stages. The only thing I've seen is my 360 froze a couple times at the same point in a specific game, which leads me to believe its the software in the game that locked it up. All in all, I'm pleased with my 360 as all of my friends are, and the only thing I would like to see happen is a free xbox live (like ps3)???

I am a Halo 3 addict and have played hundreds of hours over the past year without a single problem. Perhaps my "luck" is because I have gone out of my way to ensure my XB360 is kept cool by placing it in an open area with plenty of ventilation. I also clean the air vents regularly.

We've had one red-ring replacement so far which came after 18mos. But, we just got our REPLACEMENT PS3. We had to send the PS3 back after 11 mos. PS3 quit playing Blu-Rays. We use the 360 constantly, especially now that Netflix streams movies on it. So, replacement after 18 months of constant use on the 360 versus 11 months of an occasional Blu_ray movie usage on the PS3.  I would give the decision to Microsoft.  MS just makes the hardware failure more dramatic with a RED-RING of death. The PS3 just quietly shutdown or displayed a disk read error. No Red-warning lights... Perhaps MS will allow their systems to die more quietly in the future.

I just got my second "Rings of Death."  I tried to get MS to fix it the first time, but, MS it was out of warranty (I bought it 3 1/2 years ago).  This is really an inexcusable product defect.  They knew it had problems, released it anyway, and refuse to fix it if you are out of warranty.  That is really pathetic customer service.

I ended up finding a techie guy on Craigslist who fixed the problem for $50.  What a pain. . . .

I have had 7 XBOX360s RRoD on me and one of them lasted less than 10 days!!!!

Unpacked it from the return box from MS (It was a replacement for another unit), plugged it in and within 10 days it was dead. I have 2 units now. 1 I use, and 1 I store until the one I am using RRoDs...

I have had my 360 for a little over 2 years and just got my 4th console overall (after the first one I upgraded to the Elite system). Thank God for Best Buy's PRP! My younger brother bought his system from someplace other than Best Buy and is on his 5th system. Last year when he had his system "repaired" by MS they told him he was past his warranty, and they (MS) would fix it, but only if he paid for an extended warranty! Three weeks after he got it back, they announced the addon warranty to cover the RRoD

I had one die over a year ago, but sent it back and still have the same system that they fixed notice I used the word fixed, not sent back refurbished one. When you send it back make sure there is some kind of marking on it saying that it's yours, learned that a long time ago so I wouldn't get a refurbished one, also had another 360  just in case one died had another one to use while first one was getting fixed. That one has not died yet and had it for three years. Also don't really think putting in ventilated area has anything to do with it, because if it's going to die it's going to die. Air or no air. Microsoft has a very good product that has problems. Friend of mine said his "ELITE" got RRoD a day after bragging about how he waited to make sure he got a good product next day RRoD, very shock about that, but that the nature of the beast

I have a total of 5 red rings and nothing but trouble on this system, Microsoft did repair each time but also lost one system in shipment or at repair center, I did ask for my money back to no avail so I gave the system away to my Daughter, I am 60 years old and been playing gameing  sysytems since the 70's and found the 360 a great gaming concept but very poor design so I went back to good old computer gaming which is somewhat more stable.

After purchase in November 2008, my xBox 360 got the 'red lights of death' not once but twice. They did get a new console to me rather quickly each time, but is it worth the annoyance?

BTW - I also got a Nintendo Wii. It works great. No overheating, no loud fans, and you know what -- better games.

We are on #6 and they always take month-month and a half to get back. The customer service stinks. Don't bother with the Zune. They wanted $180. to fix it.. He had it 9 months...great warranty!!!!!!!!

My son's XBox 360 just succumbed to the 3 RROD this past week. Waiting on box for repair. He first had games freezing up for a week or so, then the 1 RROD (and got it playing again after phone tech. help) and then death. The unit is kept on top of a dresser with a ceiling fan constantly turning. We have a neighbor that has returned his 5 times for repair! Absolutely irresponsible on the part of Microsoft. Maybe this is the reason they have also backed off the "we will no longer support" the Windows XP software. To alienate the hand that feeds you will make one starve to death. Approach the public with caution Microsoft for you may make converts of us all in a very poor economy.

After that one, they all failed because of the red rings. The current one I have has lasted a lot longer but I always wonder....
