My favorite games of 2008

When a "winter storm event" paralyzed the Seattle area over the holidays, I could have turned into a grouchy Grinch. Instead, I treated the surprise "staycation" as a golden opportunity to discover new games -- and rediscover games I'd forgotten.

Which games were the most memorable for you in 2008?

After purchasing a Wii for ourselves at Christmas my wife and I have spent a lot of time playing World of Goo and Boom Blox (thanks to my brother's recommendation).  Dr. Mario - downloaded from the Wii virtual console -  has a great new game that uses the Wii controlder to drag the pills around the screen.  It's fostered a new love for a great old game.

This year, Fallout 3 is the game that really knocked my action socks off.  However, Rock Band 2, Mirror's Edge, Professor Layton and the Curious Village (very underrated here in the US), and Left 4 Dead all pulled more play time out of me.

I do know this.  In more and more games, if multiple people can't join along with me at my place, its not getting played.  Party games are becoming the new crack for casual gamers, and Rock Band 2 brought the goods this year.

Hmm, i'd have to say Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Left 4 Dead, Half Life 2 Episode 2 and MGS 4 are my big favourite games so far of 2008 (yes I know Mass Effect came out in 2007 but I didn't play it or even hear of it until september 2008).

Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, End War, and I hate to say it, but the machine building of Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts is a hoot.

I put off connecting my Wii to the internet but Mario Kart has turned out to be more fun for our family than I would have ever thought.  It has been a blast playing people from all over the world and syncing up with family and friends (you don't have to worry about unapporpriate comments or such.  Thanks Nintendo for designing WiFi that way due to the kids).  I now look for games with the WiFi label.  My favorite is 007 QofS.  Being able to point and shoot brings added realism to the gaming experience and easier to use than the old standard controllers.  I enjoy going online and playing others in total elimination.

I would have to go with Call of Duty: World at War, Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, and Gears 2.

It was interesting to me that finally someone did not write an article kissing Nintendo's bum about the Wii. It is highly overrated. Bowling is still the best game for it. I got Super Mario Galaxies, could never get into it. I got Wii fit, stopped playing it and went and joined a gym. World of Goo held my attention for one night. MarioKart was the only game I really enjoyed this year, and most of that is due to nostalgia. The games they come out with for it are also absolutely horrible and they seem to push them out as fast as possible. I realize they're just trying to get the non-gamer crowd, but it's really the worst machine compared with the other big 2.

I played SOCOM which can only played in the community logged on to the PS3 mode. Unlike other games where you learn the terrain and can adjust your kill, Hunting another human in a virtual world with teams is much more frustrating and thus more satisfying.

GTA IV and Fallout 3 garnered the most hours out of my life this past year. 4 or 5 shooters which didn't leave enough of an impression for me to recall their name filled up the remaining time in between. Currently, Dead Space is scaring the mess out of me and is proving to be one of the better games that I've played in a long time. It really deserves more attention than it has received.

My favorite in the last year was and still is World of Warcraft, but I also tried out Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa and Warhammer Online. On the console systems I was definitely into Mass Effect, Drake's Fortune and Heavenly Sword and also, to make up for all of the sedate gaming, WiiFit.
