Will you continue to pay $60 for video games?

Yes, video games offer a whole lot more bang for the buck than a night at the movies. But 60 bucks is 60 bucks. Should game publishers still expect to get top dollar during tough economic times?

I very rarely pay retail for my games anymore... since the big jump in price I now get the used version.. and I wait for the game to be more than $5 off retail price before even getting it....

The $60 price that the games are now are way too expensive for some of the titles (and crap) that you get!

Trust me, if it's a big name title like Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, or Halo, plenty of people would be more than willing to pay $60, just so that they could get it right away.

It depends on the game. Especially on the Wii... most games on the Wii aren't worth $30, let alone $60.

But gamers need to be a little more realistic, I think. In the SNES days, games used to get up to $70. We've been at the $50 point for a LONG time, and considering inflation over the last 10 years, the truth is $50 just isn't as much money as it used to be. Your grandparents used to pay a nickel for a Coke... that price went away with inflation. I think gamers need to prepare themselves for the day the $50 price rides off into the sunset.

Right now, $50 is still a good price... but the next generation may well see most games realeased at $60. And while I'm not looking forward to it, it might not be fair to make publishers set the price of games at $50 until the end of time.

Again... $60 is still too high for me now, but soon we as gamers may have to face facts.

I am a huge gamer, and I still rarely pay full price for a game. I am so back-logged on titles that I want to play, by the time I get around to them I can find them used somewhere, on eBay, or in the discount racks at retail stores.

It has been my experience that Target tries to turn their display case games around so quickly that they will regularly clearance price relatively new games. You just need to know where to look.

I agree, I used to work at a Target and I always waited until their games went on "clearance" (usually a few monthes after release) and buy them then. I got several games for less than $ 20 that were (and still are) priced $ 60 at walmart. These included Starwars KOTOR and Neverwinter Nights and more. All great games for great prices. Wish I had a Target near where I live now :(

The last game I purhcased was Left 4 Dead and that was back in November on the release date. I usually buy a game or two every month but money is so tight right now, I really dont see myself buying any games within the next few months or so.

Its so bad right now that I was trying to get Midnight Club: LA for 10 bucks when Best Buy had a sale for Silver Members. Im not a member but I was asking some dude over the net to buy it for me and I'll pay pal him the money, never worked out but this is how hard it is for me.

Dying to get Street Fighter IV but thats not going to happen now. Im seriously considering of flashing my 360 and just pirate games from now on.

Sure companies made huge sales last year but that was only because of the Xmas rush. Its really gettting harder and I dont even see AAA games getting the sales that they're supposed to be getting.

Only one way to know for sure when Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5 and Halo Wars comes out. Im sure they are going to sale but not at the numbers everyone is hoping for and its only going to get worse.

I don't see too many games remaining at the 60 price tag. There will always be the few block busters that are must buys(preorders), but the remaining titles that spark an interest will start at 60 and drop quickly to help the product move. The demand is very much there, but with the economic times, I feel more titles will be those with lasting replayability, multiplayer, overall fun vs your must buy, game is beaten over a weekend by yourself. Don't forget the used game market as well; this will always be considered by gamers looking for old classics that are just as fun as they were day one.

No way, do I buy them at full retail price. I understand the games are expensive to make but if people can't afford them, why bother???? If the target market is the young males, how are they expected to be able to keep up at 60$ a pop??? I have a great job and can't afford extravagances like that very often...my theory is that it's the same game 6 months or a year later and usually less than 1/2 the price. I can wait!

You can rent console games from Blockbuster, Gamefly, Hollywood Video, etc. Most PC games also have demo's you can download and try. This is a good way to test the game and decide that you like it before dropping $60 on it. I don't see why more people haven't figured this out yet.

Either way, the prices for new Video Games have been starting in the $40~$60 range for years. Game developers have to eat and pay bills too. Despite the economy the expectation that video game prices will go down is unrealistic. If you want video games prices to go down well then the prices of everything else should go down too, including your paychecks.

I play PC games almost exclusively though my son has an x-box 360. I very rarely pay full price for a game. I will wait months for the price to go down before I will by a game even if it is a so-called "Blockbuster" because $50-60 is too much for almost any game and $40 is too much for most. Typically if I wait 3 months after a new title is released I can save a minimum of 20% on Amazon. Oblivion stayed at 50 bucks for the longest time, even on the discount sites. I supressed the urge to pay full price for the game despite the raves from friends and family members who had already played it on the console. The PC version finally dropped under $30 for a new sealed copy a couple of months ago and I finally bought it.

                I hear ya man.

I waited over 1 year to get The Elder Scrolls:Oblivionfor my PC.

                It stayed at 50$ forever.

Then one day I go in and The Game of The Year Edition was 19.99$

                I bought it.

I would like to know when your gonna see a good game that is NOT part of a "Series"

                Final Fantasy XIII.

Final Fantasy is becoming like those Friday the 13th movies.

WAY OVERDONE..take em off the grill already.

Oblivion is well worth 50 bucks. Hell, it's worth 100 bucks. I've probably logged over 300 hours on it. I'm pretty picky about what games I play, so I don't just buy everything that comes down the pike. Since I only but 1 every few months or so, 60 dollars isn't a big deal. Plus you can turn 'em in at Gamestop and get credit toward buying more games!

Out of the 4 new console games I purchased this holiday, only one was bought at full price. The other 3 were between 25 and 50% off. Had their price not dropped, I never would have gotten them. All 4 were big-budget, triple-A titles.

If there's any controversy to be had in the pricing arena, it's in the area of used games. I think it's outrageous that companies like Gamestop buy used games for pennies on the dollar and turn around and sell them for just a few bucks less than the new versions. If I'm selling a game, I do it on eBay or Craigslist. I make considerably more money per game and my buyers still get the game cheaper than they would at Gamestop.

Each year, I will maybe buy one or two brand new games when they first come out.  Even then, I scour sale papers and websites to see if I can get a discount in the first week.  50 bucks is my top price, and I have to want it BAD.  Otherwise, like a previous poster said, you just play through your backlog and wait until you can get it for $30 or $40.  There are too many so-so, boring or poorly executed games to demand $60 a crack.  Most of the Wii games right now aren't even worth forking over $20 - absolute garbage.  I wasted a whole lot of money so far on that system for about a week of fun.

At the beginning, the argument was that it cost more to develop and much more time was involved because of "next-gen" technology. Here it is 3 years later and every developer and studio gear everything they do towards the 360 and PS3, so it still costs more? Here's a prime example; Guitar Hero: Aerosmith... $60 for Guitar Hero III with a coat of paint and half the songs. What?! There is no way that game cost the same at GH3 to develop. How about some of the very first 360 games? Virtually direct ports from last-gen machines.

The reason the game industry is doing so well is because of the large profit margin and die-hard gamers(which I am). Though, I rarely buy games on release unless it is a huge title like GoW, COD, Fallout 3(totally worth $60), Resistance, etc. If it's a game I'm interested in, but is not a must have, I'll wait a few months and/or buy at Target(like a previous poster stated) on clearance.

Bottom line is there are only 2 major players in the pricing of games(Sony and Microsoft) and they basically dictate what we should pay for a game. Nintendo doesn't fit in here simply because they primarily market to a younger audience and mommy and daddy aren't willing to shell out $60. But at $30-$40, it's a "deal"...

Anyway, I'm done. Got some WoW to play.

It would be nice if EBGames went back to focusing on PC games like they used to.

Since they bought out Gamestop they have almost done away with the PC games sales area.

Most of it is focused on Console games, both old and new.

You can't even find a Gamestop or EB that will accept a PC game in trade.

I went out and bought Virtua Fighter 4 when it first came out, paid full price for the game. About 5-8 months later the company made an updated version of the game which they had not told the consumers about. So they dropped the price of Virtua Fighter 4 to $20, and put the new game on sale for $50. If I had wanted the most up to date version I would have ended up paying $100 in the end, and the game wasn't even worth $50 to begin with. This happens quite frequently.

It all depends on the quality of the game and how people have reviewed the titles before I even buy them. $60 dollars is kind of high especially for some of the garbage that they are putting out. I recently got Resistence 2 collector Edition new for $40 on Ebay but could not see paying the $80 they wanted for it at launch. I got the same kind if deal on a new copy of Grand Theft Auto 4 collectors edition for the PS3, there again I wouldnt pay the original price they wanted for it either when it came out. There are plenty of deals for used games out there and there is no real resaon to pay full retail for them unless you are the kind of person who has to have first.

Geez, $60 isn't that bad...I remember paying $45 for original 8-bit Nintendo games back in the day. This sounds like a case of "I want it now and I want it for nothing." Sorry folks, video games are still a luxury item.

No one stops to consider that video games pay for themselves very quickly, especially the addictive ones with online capabilities. Think of the Fridays and Saturdays you stay in to play. How much cash do you spend doing that? Now think of the Fridays and Saturdays you go out. How much cash do you spend doing that? Now add it all up...and now compare.

I don't know about the rest of yous people, but I'm only going to spend that much if I really want it at that moment. Otherwise, I'll get it used.

$60 is just too much for me. Why do PC games sell for $20-$30 and console games are so much more? They can't cost that much more to develop and they seem to make money on the PC games. I try to buy used or new games on Ebay or Half.com and if you can only get them for close to list, I don't buy until they come down. The low $40 range is about the most I'll pay for a game I really want.

You are the reason we are paying 60$ in the first place..to recover the profits lost to pirates we legal game buyers pay more.

I live with a diehard gamer, and while in the past he had to have the new game when it came out, it's not like that anymore. He's still buying games, but unless it's one he "has to have" we wait for it to be in the used section. And if is is something he "has to have", he plays the demo before wasting any money.

Yeah, the price is high, but with 360, the online options available on most games make them endless (especially the last two COD's). You more than get your money's worth. I'd rather spend $60 on something that's gonna get used than waste it on beer, going out to dinner, or a movie, that no matter how good, isn't something you can watch every night.

I have both a serious gaming PC and a PS3. Generally PC games are less expensive, but to run them at their fullest potential requires a much steeper investment than a PS3 console. My rig, built around the new Intel i7 chip, cost about $1,800 to build and includes dual graphics cards in SLI. I can run resolutions in those games that a console won't even be dreaming about for years.

I much prefer to play Fallout 3, Half Life 2 (Orange Box), Bioshock, and other shooters through the PC. However, the PS3 offers exclusive games like the Resistance series, Motorstom series, and games like Warhawk. I will always be a predominate PC gamer, even though long term many feel the console is the wave of the future. But to answer this forum question, yes, I will continue to pay $60 for a PS3 game if it is one I'm interested in and not offered for the PC.
