Does the Wii need more shooters?

Nintendo has made a mint selling its Wii console to PTA moms and senior citizens. But most hard-core gamers think the Wii is lame.

Sega has three new titles that feature plenty of the qualities serious gamers appreciate: gunplay, zombies and blood. Can these titles help lure "traditional" gamers to the Wii?

I saw a flow chart recently that does an excellent job of summing up how to choose a game system (between xbox 360, ps3 and wii) based on your friends.

Do you have friends? No - ps3. Yes - see next. Do you play with your friends in person? No - 360. Yes - wii.

I would say Metroid: Prime Corruption had everything I could hope for in a FPS game except multiplayer. The Wii does an excellent job of being a party system (no system to date is more fun to play games with 2 or 3 others in the same room) but fails miserably for online versus content. Personally, I think the metroid engine would give Halo a run for its money if adapted smoothly to a similar online format.

I'm a "classics" type of gamer, but I wouldn't say hard-core. I don't do military-themed games, I'm not into RPGs (or whatever other alphabet soup your want to put on the front of that), but I enjoy the mainstream (Mario, Zelda, etc.). I've never owned the other two systems, so I wouldn't attempt to draw COMPARISONS, but as far as Wii goes, here's my take:

My favorites so far have been Twilight Princess, Okami, and Metroid Prime 3.

Maybe that makes me biased, but I think that, if they were to make more games, the most exciting ones for me would be a new Zelda game, a new Metroid series based on the Metroid Fusion GBA game (I'm sure they could come up with some cheesy title like "Metroid-X" or something), and I'd like to see the PC game "Prey" ported over and drastically expanded. I'd expect them to make "Prey" and the next Metroid a lot more adult-themed. Zelda has gotta stay at the PG level, though. I think adult themes would ruin that game.

Also, there are some really old games that would be cool to update. There was an old one called "Flashback" (in the vein of "Out Of This World") that had a storyline that could really be updated. Bungie could also stop with the "Halo" stuff for a minute and revisit "Marathon" (or even "Pathways into Darkness").

Would you buy this system, or buy more games for this system if they released a new Castlevania, Excitebike, Final Fantasy, Ninja Gaiden, a Super Mario side scroller, F-Zero, or Shining Force?

The list of great original games that could be updated is endless, but those were a few of my favorites.

What's one more system going to do against Playstation and Xbox, the gamecube tried to compete with them a couple of years ago and was completely demolished. The Wii was the second best move they ever made, the first was creating the Nintendo family.

Don't chase em Nintendo, they want you to believe that you're behind. You're not, your ahead!

I HOPE SO! As a Nintendo player for almost 20 years, I was and continue to be GREATLY disappointed in the castrated, feel-good, bleeding heart Wii games and will continue to support the 360 and PS3 over a company (Nintendo) which said "No" to the Grand Theft Auto series and other games of the like.

No, Nintendo should not try to be like the other consoles because they would fail.  Let's face facts, the Playstation 2 has better hardcore games (and more processing power) than the Wii.  The Wii should just accept what it is, the cute little system that your grandmother can play.  Nothing wrong with that, they are making tons of money.  When a Wii owner tires of the poor graphics and limited game titles there are dozens and dozens of great games awaiting them on the PS3 or 360.

True what you said about the games, but PS2 was last place in terms of processing power last-gen. The Wii is a slightly upgraded gamecube which would make it more powerful than PS2.

Just make better games period and quit pumping out shovelware. I don't need hardcore games. Just good ones.

                  amen to that!

We love the Wii, but there is a decisive lack of high quality games. The new Tenchu is pretty cool, but could have been better.

The Wii has amazing potential, but unfortunately, there are very few games that push the envelope on the Wii. Most of the games are crap; it looks like someone took a week and put out a game just to put something out. I currently have about 15 games. Tiger Woods 08 and 09 are my favorites, but I would love to see some really cool first person RPGs in the vein of World of Warcraft or such... Come on Nintendo, stop licensing companies to put out crappy shovelware games and get busy leveraging a system that has amazing possibilities!

When the Wii made it's debut, my son was adamant about getting that console even though I offered to get him an XBox 360. He had many games for his Game Cube which were playable on the Wii. He now has quite a few Wii titles that he's finished, but now seldom plays them. His biggest gripe about the console is that it doesn't target real gamers, but only the mainstream casual gamer. He isn't a graphics junky, as I've seen him play the original Doom on his computer as early as last week. There needs to be an influx of serious games for the Wii that are designed with true gamers in mind or Nintendo will lose that market. I know of several Wii consoles that are gathering dust now that the novelty has worn off.

yes i know this is an old discussion but still the question is really burning the back of my mind, what IS a "serious" or "true" gamer really supposed to be??? I mean, I've played on almost all the systems and so far supposed serious gamers are craving either graphics or intensely violent themed games. I don't have a problem with those, I enjoy them too. But it's just that I consider myself a serious or true gamer because I can enjoy almost all games, so I'm really stuck in the middle when it comes to the masses of arguments about system specs and game comparisons. on the main topic, yes nintendo does release a lot of crap and it's so so disappointing because i just KNOW they can do better than that. As I read in an earlier comment I'd just like to see better games, not necessarily more serious ones though I wouldn't mind that either.

I have a XBOX 360 and do all my "hard-core" gaming on that. and me and my fiancee just received a Wii for a wedding gift. YES, SHE WAS THE ONE THAT SUGGESTED TO PUT IT ON OUR REGISTRY!!! HOW AWESOME. The real reason I wanted the Wii is so my fiancee would play games with me, Face it Halo, COD, those are not her games, but she will play Wii games, Wii fit, Mario cart, and pretty much any Wii title. I still use my 360 for the shooting games etc. I also think 360 has a better selection of games for the hard-core gamer, but the Wii has the interactive games which is a nice change of pace. I love having both systems, best of both worlds. I have committed if I am going to play halo or any other game and haven't worked out that day yet, I have to play 30 mins of Wii Fit first.

I'm considering selling my Wii. Why?

I've played: Wii Sports, Smash Brothers Brawl, Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Super Mario Galaxy. Wii Sports is lame. Brawl is no better than the Gamecube version. (Mario Kart isn't a huge leap from the GC version either, so I haven't made the plunge.) Zelda was fine while it lasted, but I'm tired of it. And Super Mario Galaxy was so pathetically easy that I didn't even bother getting halfway through the game.

I'm no hard core gamer, but I am a gamer. I'm a DS junkie, an iPod Touch addict, I still love my Gamecube, and I'm just starting to get into the PS2. (Yes, a bit late, I know.) I'll take any game--casual, hardcore, you name it--so long as it's good.

Can anyone name a single Wii title that isn't shovelware? I've gotten much more fun out of Bounce On (an iPod Touch/iPhone game that sells at $3.99, but I got it on sale for $1.99) than I got out of Super Mario Galaxy. Count me out on the next Nintendo console.

The wii does need more games that appeal to the traditional 'gamer', like me. They've tried doing this with several titles, including Call of Duty 5, but they just aren't the same. I'll admit, I love the controls, and the single player was good, but everyone knows it's the multiplayer that counts. If the multiplayer isn't good, and it really isn't very good in CoD 5 for Wii, then gamers aren't going to buy it.

Wii system is for children and adults who need to start moving. For serious gaming 360 or PS3 is the way to go! Nintendo has some of the best "theme games" and characters...wish they would make games for the PS3.

Reading alot of these comments here, I'd say to really be able to overlook the flaws the wii has, you would have to be a hardcore fan (most call them fan boys/girls). You could call me one I guess even though I also enjoy ps3 and xbox360 just as much. I think what roped me in with the wii the most was the overall financial convenience on top of being fun...that's a perfect set up for a joke but i don't think i'll have to say it:

You could buy the classics for cheap(including sega, each game was 5-12 dollars max last i checked, oh the memories lol)

Free Online (yes i'm aware ps3 has this as well)

I found their various channels amusing (weather and all that good stuff, i watched youtube on my tv out of boredom sometimes)

I loved the realism of playing certain games (the high interaction games similar to wii sports)

And lastly it just fun, plain honest fun, it's a nice vacation from the competitive xbox360 scene (seriously, some people play too intensely...and ps3 players well, they mostly play alone...still a great system though)

But getting back on topic here, it would be nice to see more games that reached out to the "hardcore/serious/true" gamers, the bigger the wii community the better right? I'm kind of neutral about it all so I can't make any solid points, but this is just my take on the topic.
