Some video game characters are utterly forgettable, but we've picked the top 5 of the best, most enduring and charismatic icons the medium has to offer.
Which game icons are most iconic for you?

Pikachu.
Leon Kennedy
Sam Fisher and Frank Castle, i know he only has like one and a half game out...but its still awesome. And Same Fisher is just the Bomb!
The now demolished Meigs Field , Chicago, MS Flight Simulator.
Good ol' Meigs. Can't count the number of times taken off and landing at that airport on the sim back in the day. FS 5.1 anyone, on a whole stack of floppys. I probably still have them too though I dont have a computer with a drive that will read them.
At the risk of making this seem like a Nintendo Love fest Link should really be on the list.
While Master Chief deserves praise for putting XBox on the map, Link helped create & define the adventure game.
That's what I said.. where is Link?? Link easily outpaces Sonic or Master Chief in the big picture....
Yup I couldn't agree more. If it was a top 10 I think we could squeeze Master Chief in, but Link, Samus, and Solid Snake would come first.
Lolwut? Link outplaces Masterchief but not Sonic. Definitely not Sonic.
Solid Snake
Exactly what I came here to say. The others - fine - can't deny Sonic, Mario and Pac-Man their place (though Lara is kind of on the line), but Master Chief over Link? Nope - fail.
my "dead slug"
Most popular?: Mario, Pikachu, Link, Sonic, Pac-Man.
My favorites: The Vault Dweller, Samus Aran, Sephiroth, Link, Sonic
Good point about Samus. At the risk of being Nintendo-heavy, my top 5, in terms of pure icon-ness (as opposed to personal preference, gameplay, etc.) would be:
5. Samus
4. Sonic
3. Link
2. Pac-Man
1. Mario
No Gordon Freeman? Probably one of the most identifiable video game icons that one never really sees. If not Gordy than at least G-Man should get a mention.
yah g man
Sonic may still be recognizable but there has not been a significant Sonic game since, what seems to be, the old Genesis days.
While they may not be recognizable to to the casual gamer, characters such as Solid Snake, Link, Samus, Gordon Freeman, Kratos, and the Space Marine (Doom) are far more significant and important then Sonic or Lara Croft.
ICON is the operative word. While MGS and whatever the hell other games you've listed (I've only heard of Solid Snake, Link, and Samus) may be a barrel of fun, they aren't iconic. A person off the street would never be able to tell you who they are.
It's not how fun the games are but how famous they are.. Sure what ever you listed may be a hell of a good time but the truth is how many people heard of them?
Link should be on the list, I think you could even make a strong argument for Samus the rest of these characters were important for the continued evolution of video games but aren't as big as Mario, PacMan, and Sonic. By the way, why hasn't anyone brought up Donkey Kong yet?
sprzach: I would think that since Mario debuted in Donkey Kong, the list compiler thought one character per franchise (or cluster of related franchises) was enough. Mario is certainly more iconic than his simian one-time counterpart.
How could the weighted companion cube not be on this list? Ok maybe not but someone had to say it. I agree with gordon freeman and solid snake though.
What about Donkey Kong or your little triangular ship in Asteroids?
Q-Bert?
I like the list but I would add Megaman and RamJet the robo-dog to be sure. I loved that game.
Dang it, I meant Rush the dog.
How could you possibly leave Link out of this list?
I like link too but I still cannot get that song out of my head. :-)
What song?
Link by L'arc ~ En ~ Ciel?
How could you possibly leave Link out of this list? AGREED. Master Cheif versus Link...Master Cheif should not have been in the top 5. GO LINK.
Link isn't as recognizable as the Master Chief by the casual gamer, not by a long shot.
Hello! Duke Nukem, he was the reason I built my first computer. Like Duke would say "Come get some!"
pres space bar in level two in the strip club and you were a happy guy lol go d3d.
Here's the thing about Master Chief... While he is highly recognizable, he's a copy of the marine from Doom. Moreso, as neato as the Halo series is, Doom was more pivital to the development of the whole FPS genre.
The rest of the list is pretty accurate.
This list is bunk. Notice how MSNBC adds MS's "Chief". That guy is last character I would include. The only 2 on the list I support are Pacman and Mario.
Where is Solid Snake?
Lets see add these to your list:
1. Ken, Ryu, Chun-li
2. Scorpion, Sub Zero, Raiden
3. DK himself
4. John Madden - Boom he hits the hole......<rewind> Boom....<rewind>Boom...........
I forgot this one:
Left, Right, Left, Left, Body Blow, Body Blow, UPPER CUT!
Little Mac - Punch Out! (even before they added Mike Tyson)
Donkey Kong, yes. Ken, maybe. (Not quite sure who you're talking about. From Street Fighter? That guy in the white headband with the red headtie?) Scorpion and who ever else? No. John Madden? No.
You have to admit EA and Madden have changed the way we look at sports games as a ganre itself.
Yeah DK needed to be on this list, even more so than Link. Without DK, there is no Mario and the Princess.
Link.
Link and Gordon Freeman no doubt are missing. Master Chief? Eh.... it is in fact his armor and his lack of a face that makes him almost immaterial. Who is he? Who cares. He is a personality less character in the game.
LINK is a staple of adventure gaming as Zelda pretty much invented the hybrid genre; this list is just another frivolous waste of data and webpage space - seriously what is even the point of making a list like this except to try and sell more XBox games -thanks MSnbc, thanks for being honest. This is a joke. Maybe I'm just old but Zelda was the first game I remember saying I WANT THAT! And this was 1988 when I was 7 - today I am playing Twilight Princess hours each day after a decade Zelda-hiatus. Link Freaking rules, they haven't had to change the character or give him (many) new abilities to make him fun to play with. And the interface controls have always been great - unlike Sonic. Sonic's a fun game but seriously, the guys a carbon copy of a faster Mario - they invented him to directly compete with Super Mario 3. Pathetic.
So, wait, the impression I'm getting here is because this list doesn't have your favorite video game character on it, it's completely useless, right?
Oh, and a game with one of the biggest launch day sales in history is by no means allowed on this list because Microsoft's name is attached to this list?
You know, I could really see where you were coming from had Master chief beat out Mario. But as stated in my comment below, Master Chief is highly recognizable, and while we all as gamers know Link in a second, my mother certainly doesn't know him. In fact, the majority of non-gamers either do not know him, or think his name is Zelda.
Sonic was indeed invented to compete with Mario, but in that day and age, Mario was THE video game. Kinda like I'm sure Twilight Princess is for you right now. That one game that validates video games in general, the one EVERYONE had to play.
Sonic took the familiar platforming concept of many games of that time and injected huge speed into it, looking to gain an audience of gamers looking for that extra rush Mario didn't give. it was this core concept of speed that set it apart and made it what it was, which isn't a carbon clone of Mario, but a genre with an enitrely different ideal.
And I love Link, and I love the Zelda franchise, I really do. He[s an amazing character, in an amazing series, back from the nes, to today on the Wii/Gamecube, and I believe a DS one is out or in the works at the moment. But Zelda fans, while possesing so much more fervor and energy and vitality and passion than most Halo gamers... Well, Halo has the bigger fanbase and recognizability.
Iconic seems to be the point this whole thing is predicating on...which if anything, makes me realize that in fact, these people DO put thought into these articles. After all, they had to pick the word "Iconic", which means they did put some thought into making sure their game got in there with all the really good games that all GAMERS would recognize. After all, if they hadn't gone back and dissected their article before it hit the web, people would have torn them a new one for trying to associate Halo with all the really good games out there. But saying, "iconic", or simply saying, "To the people who don't really play video games or care about video games", they can then put nearly ANYTHING in this list. Heck, if you like faceless, soulless gaming icons, why not just pick any of the avatars from StarSeige's Tribes? Halo was/is nothing, and certainly not any sort of game in the class of Link, Mario, or any of the genuine classic video games.
MSNBC...again with the spin! Liberal morons.
C'mon!!! Link needs to be in there!
And how on eart could you not include the one and only?
Kratos....
nintendo leads the way - mario, link, shamus and dk. from young to old - they are the ones that stand out
I agree that Master Chief should not be on this list. Maybe on a top-ten. Maybe. You ask most people over the age of 40 if they know who Master Chief is ... they probably will not know. Perhaps, when the movie comes out ... he'll get more popular.
You ask the same people if they know who Pac-Man, Mario, Donkey Kong, and Sonic the Hedgehog are ... they probably would know. They would probably also know Lara Croft (at least they would know her as the girl from Tomb Raider).
Link and Samus Aran should be there, but their names aren't as well known. Older people might know them as the main characters from Zelda and Metroid. Pikachu is more popular in the cartoon and card game.
5. Lara Croft, Tomb Raider (must have her title in there)
4. Sonic the Hedgehog
3. Donkey Kong
2. Pac-Man
1. Mario
