Really.  you people must have something better to do. That was almost as big of a waste of time as me responding to this non-sense

#1 - never heard of her

#2 - delighfully moronic and insulting

#3 - never heard of her

#4 - You call Lara superficial, yet go on to mention this one's lips and phsyical traits of the others. Superficial in both cases.

#5 - You're kidding. "Bring home a princess"? How delightfully sexist, maybe we can combine her with teh Cooking Mama! Gag.

Oh, and Samus was completely cool. If you're going to insult combat boots, maybe you can extend that to insulting all the proud women currently seriving in the Armed Forces while you're at it.

Guys reviewing these games should keep in mind that they aren't necessality intended for male gamers.

And feminist reviewers of video games should keep something in mind as well: Female gamers are a minority, which is why most female characters in video games are designed to capture the much larger male demographic; male gamers want the female characters to look young, beautiful and sexually appealing--hence all the large breasts and skimpy attire that embarrass the female gamers (and feminist reviewers of video games). It does little good to get snarky about male interests in sexually alluring women--whether on the street or on the screen. You can't talk boys and men out of liking the sex appeal in games anymore than you can argue them out of thinking sugar is sweet.

Regardless of anyone's thoughts on these games in specific, they are intended to fill a new market: In order to capture a larger female audience, the industry is now designing games with female characters that appeal more to girl and women players--characters that de-emphasize the sex appeal of the female characters in favor of their function in the plot of the game. It's nice to see the industry broaden its appeal to both male and female audiences. And that audience includes those female gamers who have more male-typical interests in violence-oriented adventure games but don't want to play female characters that look like they stepped out of a soft-core porn movie.

That said, many *tomboy* gamers of a feminist bent will surely continue to be upset that some of the new games designed for girls seem to emphasize so-called *stereotypes* around cooking, shopping, or childcare, but they should keep in mind that their fellow-female gamers aren't necessarily into shooting guns and blowing things up like they are (and, of course, like men are).

Thinking female gamers are a minority, and female gamers actually BEING a minority are two completely different things.

Just because a game is targeted toward a specific audience doesn't mean other audiences can't enjoy it for other reasons, or regularly don't.

Zoë Castillo from Dreamfall. She is

          1. Pretty (duh)

          2. Intelligent

          3. Kind hearted

          4. Loyal

What more could a mom want for her son ?

Speaking personally, I think the moms I know would be rather happy to have Samus as a prospective daughter-in-law. Versitile, creative, hard-working, intelligent, and knows how to put "speak softly and carry a big stick" to good use. "Wears combat boots" is a bad thing? Not for the moms I know.

Zelda wasn't a bad choice, but can we look beyond the "princess" factor for a moment? In OoT she wasn't just a pretty face: she was also the Sage of Time and a pretty badass caster as well as a guardian of lore and familial artifacts. She had family loyalty to her father beyond kingship, and was a very compassionate empath. The fact that she comes from money shouldn't be a factor if you're trying to stay away from "superficial".

What about Aerith, pretty soft-spoken spiritualist who loves people and flowers? Or Mallon, the farmgirl from OoT, an earthy horse-lovin' cowgirl with a ready laugh, pretty voice, and a sense of humor? Really folks, there are better game-girls who deserve to be on this list than the weird ninja-wannabe from Mirror's Edge.

              Chris Lightfellow from Suikoden 3

              Elhaym Van Houten from Xenogears

Mia Ausa from LUNAR: Silver Star Story

              Yuna from Final Fantasy X

All strong heroines, though they don't all start that way.

What about Alyx Vance from Half-Life 2? She ticks all those boxes. A little chatty maybe, but given that Freeman doesn't say a word, that's an asset.

Alyx Vance is the only game girl I would ever take home to meet my mother. Did not even make the list????

                            How about GlaDos?

How did Yuna from FFX not make the list? She's sweet, active in her community, and serious about her work, but knows when to break tradition. She even improved her family's business model by slaying the monster instead of sacrificing herself to keep it at bay, like her father did.

Who ever makes these stupid lists needs to stop. This list is probably the worst I've seen. One you didn't mention one of the Final Fantasy girl, especially Yuna. Two the only good one on your list is Zelda (other then the stupid princess comment). Three I've never even heard of two of the chicks you mentioned. Four the first chick is covered in weird marks and tatoos something my mother would scream at me about.

Katie McReary from GTA4: Cute redhead. She knows how to keep her legs closed on a date. She won't just hop in the sack with someone just because you brought her to the Cluckin' Bell for the 10th time... lol Sure, her brothers are all gangsters, but she stays clear of their dealings.

Yuna is definitely a great choice. Probably my #1 choice, for much the same reasons mentioned above!
